SHALLOW LAKES CONFERENCE

“Structure and function of world shallow lakes"

URUGUAY 2008

We are very pleased to invite you to the sixth edition of the Shallow Lakes Congress, this time with Uruguay as host country. This is the first time the congress will take place outside Europe, its original arena, which implies an excellent opportunity for the interaction between regional and worldwide researchers.

During the last decades, the environmental quality of most shallow lakes has deteriorated notoriously in the world landscape, mainly due to anthropogenic eutrophication, inappropriate management of the water level and the arrival of invasive species. On top of these perturbations, climate change is likely exerting new impacts on these vulnerable ecosystems.

We hope that the congress "Structure and Function of World Shallow Lakes” will provide a unique opportunity to share knowledge and experiences, with a strong emphasis on research conducted under diverse, either past, present or future climatic scenarios.

The event is organized by the Faculty of Sciences-Universidad de la República and will take place from the 23rd to the 28th of November 2008 in the outskirts of the seaside resort Punta del Este.

We look forward to seeing you in Uruguay!

On behalf of the Organizing Committee

Dr Néstor Mazzeo, Dr Mariana Meerhoff
